EL Flatlite
By J. Berning
This
product from BeingSeen is basically neon lights that are almost totally
flat. This new type of neon light is affordable and is very flexible,
so it can be adapted to almost any place you'd like to add them. Get
ready to make your house or car glow!
The EL FLATLITE (electroluminescent
lighting) is basically an electrochemical light source that uses a phosphor
chemical to produce light as electricity is run through it. What is
remarkable about this product is that it is extremely thin and flexible.
I measured it to be a mere 1mm thick. The widths can vary from .25"
clear up to 27" and is available in 8 cool colors. You can also
get it in lengths up to 300'. The neon also produces no heat so it's
very safe and can be placed anywhere.
The
kit I got had both .25" and .5" in 3 different colors. The
colors were blue, yellow, and orange. I strung them out, plugged them
into the inverter (power source) and turned them on. I was quite amazed
by how bright they were. The glow was consistent throughout the length
of each cable and was very much like the glass neon lights you're accustomed
to seeing. It really performs well in the dark, making its glow very
pronounced. These are dimmable, but you'll have to rig up a way to limit
the electricity to the inverter. I accomplished this by installing an
X10 lamp module on mine.
The
power source for these lights is an Inverter Driver. These convert electricity
from your household AC electricity into a DC current with the proper
frequency. You can also get other inverters to be able to use battery
power if you want to run off of a car battery or even a 9-volt. The
FLATLITE has a wire pre-soldered to the end of it and this plugs into
the inverter wire. This makes connecting and disconnecting the FLATLITE
a snap. They seemed to solve the problem I've found with other inverters, no more high-pitched noise when it is on.
They are virtually silent.
Another
standout feature of this product is the ability to cut it to size. All
you have to do is take a sharp pair of scissors and cut off the end.
The end then has to be resealed with sealing tape or re-laminated. This
will let you install these lights in a professional manner and let you
make some cool designs.
I
had intentions of installing these lights in my living room and incorporating
them into my home theater. My wife, however, put a stop to that. She
thought neon lights would take away from the pretty look of her house.
So I had to resort to playing with them in my office and not getting
to experiment like I wanted. I think this product is really awesome,
as do all guys I've showed this too. Girls don't think like us I guess,
so there's a word of caution for you! I do plan on installing neon lights
down my stairway on each side, kind of like lighted halls in a movie
theater. These flat lights will be perfect for this application.
Other than that there's not much to these. They
are much cheaper than regular neon lights, flat, and flexible. This
company also has neon cable lights in all sizes and neon sheets. They
also make small neon light cables and inverters for computer case modding
(Which I also have and it does look awesome). They have pre-made kits
of all sizes, so go have a look at the BeingSeen website. 3 stars
